The University of Michigan Certificate of Competency, like the Certificate of Proficiency, is officially recognized by the Greek State (Government Gazette, ΑΣΕΠ Announcement Issue No 3/13 Feb. 1996). The Certificate of Competency is also recognized by the private sector (i.e. airline companies, travel agencies, private banks, shipping firms, insurance companies, etc).

What is the examination format?

The exam is divided into four sections administered in the following order:

  • In the first section, which lasts 20-25 minutes, the candidate is tested in his/her understanding of spoken English.
  • The second section consists of 100 items: 35 grammar items, 35 vocabulary items and 30 reading comprehension items. Candidates are required to complete this section in 80 minutes.
  • In the third section candidates have 30 minutes to write a letter or a composition as a response to a prompt.
  • The speaking test is the fourth section of the examination. It is a one-on-one, structured interview which lasts 10-15 minutes. The topics and the tasks are set by the English Language Institute of the University of Michigan.

How long does the test last?

The written part of the examination (sections 1-3) lasts approximately 3 hours with the instructions included. The speaking test lasts 10-15 minutes.
